by Guiseppe Barranco/Port Arthur News
With the help of a local
radio station, several teens are learning about life, discovering
a career and having fun in the process.
A special program offered by KSAP-107.1 LPFM The Breeze is providing
high school students the opportunity to learn and work at the
station as a disc jockey.
"I like to talk on issues about health, drugs and focus
on staying in school," Karen Sauceda, 17, student DJ for
the station, said.
Sauceda is one of the several Memorial High School students
who intern as a DJ for the station from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays
and Thursdays.
"This program gives students an opportunity to do something
different and to keep them off the streets in a positive direction," Fernando
Ramirez, disc jockey for The Breeze, said.
While on the air, student DJs invite their friends from school
to call in and express anything on their mind.
"Karen is great at this. She is so in tuned with the kids
on all these issues," Ramirez, said.
Along with announcers, Ramirez also looks for students with
special talents to be on the show.
"I like to invite students with a talent in music to help
get them started. I think it encourages them and they look at
it as 'wow, someone wants me to be on the radio,'" Ramirez,
said.
The students are acquiring a leg up in a career and receiving
direction toward college, where Lamar State College-Port Arthur
offers several classed in the music industry, Ramirez, said.
"This program gives students an opportunity to learn a
trade and almost be a celebrity," Ramirez, said.
Transmitting form the City Hall, annex, the Breeze has been
on the FM radio waves for around a month.
Currently renting the City Hall space, studio officials are
discussing plans to buy their own facility to allow for more
freedom in air time.
"We have to abide by the operating hours of the city which
can be difficult at nights and on the weekends," Ramirez,
said.
